A Writing Curriculum Overview of WriteShop
The Write Shop homeschool writing curriculum has programs for elementary through high school. It works well for all ranges and abilities, from reluctant to advanced writers. The WriteShop writing curriculum is broken into five different parts:
- pre-writing activities
- story planning (brainstorming)
- story writing
When the writing process is broken down into smaller sections like this, it’s not only easier for children, but also easier for homeschooling parents to organize, follow and facilitate.
Overview of WriteShop Primary Curriculum – Book B
In the pre-writing portion of the elementary through high school WriteShop curriculum, parents guide their child through the completion of a series of activities. They may be asked to read from a book or complete included worksheets. The activities are mixed right in with guided practice. If you have a struggling writer or reluctant writer, these activities engage your child in the first steps of the writing process.
Story Planning (Brainstorming)
The next section of WriteShop homeschool writing curriculum is brainstorming or story planning. Here you’ll guide your child to come up with ideas based on the topic or theme they will write about. Brainstorming activities range from making a list to creating a brainstorming craft or worksheet. Both are included in your student workbook pack.
This is where your child actually writes their writing piece. It includes directions and a how-to guide to make the process easier. The tips and resources set your child set up for success right from the start. WriteShop has thought of every scenario for children with a variety of learning styles. This section includes a ‘Smaller Steps,’ portion, ideal for struggling or reluctant writers who need the writing piece broken into smaller increments.
It can also work well for students who may need additional guidance from their parents. For accelerated writers, the homeschool writing curriculum also has a segment called, ‘Flying Higher.’ This offers ideas to help you facilitate your children’s understanding and ideas to help make their writing more advanced.
WriteShop Editing/Revising Process
This section of the writing curriculum is the place where you and your child really look at their work as a team. The complexity of the editing process increases as the child’s grade level increases. In the primary book, you and your child are looking for any changes your child wants to make to their writing.
As your child’s grade level and age increases, your child will highlight misspelled words, making sure all writing elements are in their writing, correct their grammar, and more.
