To say that I was thrilled when I downloaded the Torchlight Level 5: Equity & Ethics curriculum would be an understatement! At its core, it highlights social studies and will bring you on a roller coaster ride through cities, globalization, and citizenship. If you’re looking to raise a truly global citizen, this is the curriculum for you.
Geared for kids aged 10-14, the curriculum looks at the global community as a whole and encourages children and caregivers to work toward becoming effective global citizens. According to the company’s website, the focus involves the notion of, “dismantling our natural propensity to stereotype by learning how our brains work and when it is helpful to categorize versus harmful. Then we will work on gaining tools to help us better understand our global neighbors and ourselves, no matter our differences.”
Now, if you feel as though this is a tall order for a homeschool curriculum, you’d probably be right. I wholeheartedly agree, but I will say that Torchlight pulls this endeavor off seamlessly.
Let’s dive in!
What does Torchlight Level 5: Equity and Ethics Cover?
Overall, the curriculum is one that you could easily take bits and pieces of over the course of the year and come back to later when your child is ready. Or, you could just complete it all as it stands – there’s a lot of quality material and resources here.
From lessons in “Spotting Fake News” and learning about The Challenger Explosion and climate change, Torchlight Level 5, speaks to my values, focus, and overall goals I have for my son.
The curriculum uses Scientific Connections through Inquiry to explore biomes, astronomy, and more. Students will take part in National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) which has been one of my goals with my kids for years! They’ll cover creative writing and poetry as well, which speaks to my Poetry Tea Time heart.
Torchlight’s The Art of Rock and Roll vol.1
In a 19-lesson self-contained portion of the curriculum, Torchlight approaches art through music with The Art of Rock & Roll, vol. I. It focuses on those that influenced rock and roll and those who were inspired by the pioneers of rock and roll. Incorporating art through photography, geography, and science is yet another key component of the curriculum.
Torchlight’s The Art of Navigating Finance
Let’s talk money!
Which, if you’re a homeschooler, teaching your kids finance is probably at the top of your list. Torchlight’s The Art of Navigating Finance fits the bill if you’re looking to introduce your child to money basics. It covers finance and making smart money moves and allows them to take the reins and put what they learn to use with project-based learning practice.

Torchlight Curriculum Includes Literature-based Learning
If you like books, you’ll love this curriculum. Torchlight is literature-based. Using the included Literature Primers you’ll be better prepared to work with your child to discuss their readings. Torchlight takes the pressure off you as a learning partner. It helps you naturally work in conversations around the books that won’t have you scrambling for words or trying to figure out what to talk about.
Each of the books takes readers through diverse situations, cultures, and experiences promoting activism, own-voices representation, and even covering mental health and wellness issues. These are key and pivotal points that many of our young children are missing in education and I wholly appreciate Torchlight’s commitment to talking about the things no one else is discussing, especially where our kids are concerned. They say it best on their website, “from outward activism to internal struggle, we will explore what drives humanity”
How I Really Feel About Torchlight Level 5: Equity & Ethics
Torchlight Level 5: Equity & Ethics includes a daily and weekly lesson plan that will last for 36 weeks of your homeschool year. Your child will be exposed to poetry, vocabulary, literature, science, social studies and geography, and of course equity and ethics; and in my opinion, is one of the most comprehensive curriculum options out there. I was completely impressed by the sheer depth of this curriculum.
The curriculum offers a list of books and a checklist for books you’ll need to grab from the library; everything is linked within the curriculum, which is a convenient PDF download so it’s a great option for families who are on the road or have limited space.

As mentioned, the Literature Primers offer insight into the purpose, educational value, and intent that the company had when choosing the literature options. They also include notes for caregivers so they know when the material could pose ethical or secular issues which will allow the caregiver to adjust according to their values and belief systems. I appreciate how inclusive Torchlight is, in this regard!
