Coding is an increasingly important skill in our fast-paced and ever-changing world. The Bureau of Labor and Statistics reports that software development jobs are slated to increase by 21% between now and 2028. For many young people, coding has been built into popular games and toys that they enjoy, but for families who want to include programming classes into their homeschool – or just supplement what their child is learning in school – there are plenty of options.
One such option, that we’ve had the pleasure of using over the last several weeks, is MYTEK LAB, they offer engaging live online technology classes for learners in grades 3 through 12. Whether your child is just dabbling in programming, looking to expand on what they know, or considering pursuing it as a career, there is something for every interest level.
MYTEK LAB Technology Education Offerings
If you’re interested in learning more about MYTEK LAB or signing your learner up for a class, check out the current MYTEK LAB technology course offerings to see if there’s a fit. And remember, if your student isn’t a fan of the live class model, MYTEK LAB also offers Flex Pace classes.
Flex Pace is a highly adaptable course alternative designed to cater to students’ varying schedules,” MYTEK LAB co-founder, Jacky Souders explained. “This learning approach involves weekly recorded videos and lesson releases, allowing students the convenience to engage with the course content according to their own timelines.”
Why Online Technology Classes Work For Us
If there’s one thing I’ve learned on this homeschooling journey is that when you’ve successfully mastered the art of creating independently responsible learners, the homeschooling process becomes simple, easy, and rewarding for everyone.
For families like ours, who are always on the go, the live class has been working really well. It’s relaxed enough to where we were able to travel out of state for almost two weeks, and my homeschooler was able to check in via replay and submit his assignments after the fact. Flex Pace would also work really well in this situation, especially for full-time roadschoolers.
My 12-year-old is currently taking Information Technology 1 and since the start of the class several weeks ago, he’s been truly engaged in a way I hadn’t seen him engaged before. He looks forward to the assignments and enjoys taking his time working through them. The course is geared for the middle and high school level and designed for learners in Grades 6 through 10.
He’s learning the fundamentals of programming and using a variety of applications. Soon he’ll be learning 2D Game Art, VR development, web design, robotics and so much more. All that’s required is either a Windows or Mac OS laptop or desktop, an internet browser, and Zoom video conferencing capabilities.
My Harsh Truth When It Comes to Programming
So, here’s the thing. I like to think that I know enough about technology to get by. Granted, I still have to get my kids to help me when I want to watch something on television; I mean, why do we need three separate remotes for one TV? But, I know enough to get by. I can use WordPress to create a decent blog post and I’m pretty social media savvy, but when it comes to programming? Forget it!
Unfortunately, I cannot understand or even try to understand programming. Ok, I’ll admit, I had a pretty snazzy Myspace page back in the day and know my way around HTML, but programming today? There’s no way.
And it’s not for lack of trying, I really do try to understand, especially when my 12-year-old is so excited and engaged. He comes to me regularly to explain what he’s working on, describe what he’s considering including in his next MYTEK LAB assignment, and has even created his own games and animations in Blender, Scratch, and other applications that I truly cannot remember the names of.
But, I’m so grateful for resources like MYTEK LAB, because I can sit on the sidelines and let my son create and learn to his heart’s content. He’s in capable, safe hands with the founders of the company; Stephen and Jacky Souders. MTEK LAB makes life easier for busy homeschooling families, especially ones who are…technology-challenged!
If your child is ready to start coding classes and you want to ensure they’re on the right path for future opportunities, check out what MYTEK LAB has to offer today!
